Madonna is een van de beste vrouwelijke popmuziekartiesten aller tijden. Haar ster steeg naarmate de videoclip volwassen werd als een vorm van visuele kunst. 1. Vogue - 1990

Honderden dansers deden auditie voor de delen in Madonna's "Vogue" muziekvideo. Veel van de dansers verschenen ook met Madonna op haar concert "Blond Ambition". De clip werd geregisseerd door David Fincher, die later een van de meest gevierde hedendaagse filmregisseurs zou worden. Veel van de scènes in de video zijn opzettelijke reproducties van het klassieke zwart-witte mode-fotografiewerk uit de jaren 40 van Horst P. Horst. Close-up vormt echo's van Hollywoodsterren als Marilyn Monroe, Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich en Jean Harlow. "Vogue" werd gefilmd op een set met art deco-thema's. Madonna veroorzaakte controverse door het dragen van een kanten blouse die haar borsten lijkt te ontmaskeren. MTV vroeg om verwijdering, maar Madonna weigerde. Wat overbleef was een prachtige en elegante hulde, ontwikkeld in de underground gay ballroom-cultuur. De choreografie is ontworpen door Karole Armitage, die een nominatie voor de Tony Award verdiende voor de choreografie van de heropleving van de Broadway musical "Hair" in 2009. De videoclip "Vogue" ontving negen MTV Video Music Award-nominaties die drie prijzen wonnen. "Rolling Stone" vermeldde "Vogue" als de # 2 videoclip aller tijden in 1999, de tweede keer alleen voor Michael Jackson's "Thriller".

A long time ago — at the beginning of her career — I met her in Florida during a party with American friends. She sang some songs there on invitation. With me, many people in attendance had never heard of her back then. But that was different two years later. Cute American girl with Italian roots.
