252-201 million years BC.
- All continents during the Triassic period were part of a single land mass called Pangaea. Being a single land mass, the differences between different animals and plants were much less evident than they are today. On the other hand, the climate was relatively warm and dry, and many areas of Pangea were large deserts.
This fundamentally warm environment — in fact, the current polar ice caps did not exist — was conducive to the evolution of the first species of dinosaurs. Reptiles tend to thrive in warm climates because their skin is less porous than, say, mammalian skin. Among their environmental adaptations, reptile kidneys can conserve water longer.
The vast majority of dinosaurs appeared at the end of the Triassic Period, at which time Pangaea would split in two due to a series of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Among them, theropods and prosauropods stand out. With the passage of time, dinosaurs began to colonize the earth, due to the absence of competition and with empty ecological niches. Among the most common dinosaurs of the Triassic period are the Lystrosaurus, the Cynognathus, the Ornithosuchus, the Herrerasaurus and the Plateosaurus.
