Finally.
About time!
Imagine eating spaghetti with meatballs in the fanciest restaurant around the place where you live and suddenly your phone vibrates, making you almost choke on the delicious meal you're literally devouring in front of your vampire parents.
Because that was what had just happened to Renesmee.
She was greedily swallowing her portion of food in front of her horrified parents, who were hoping that nobody else was watching how their teenage daughter that they had "brought up" was embarrassing herself.
"Mmm, it's awfully delicious," she mumbled with food in her mouth, causing her mother to make a weird face at her.
"Slow down and chew, Renesmee!", Edward scolded, trying not to raise his voice too much but still trying to sound firm. He earned an eye-roll from his child - he had to discuss her behaviour with her when they went home.
Renesmee kept devouring her food until she felt her phone vibrate in the pocket of her jeans. The vibration startled her so much that she almost choked on her meatballs, causing her to cough too loudly and to have people turn in her direction to stare. Bella and Edward were too ashamed to handle the situation properly, especially Bella, who dragged Renesmee away to the bathrooms to holler at her and to humiliate her even more.
"Renesmee!", her mother hissed, scolding her, "Your father told you to slow down! You could have choked and died!"
"Mom," Renesmee attempted to gravitate her mother's attention to the ladies that had focused on them instead of themselves, but Bella was too caught up yelling at her child to even understand what was going on around her, "Do not interrupt me, when I speak, young lady!"
It wasn't until her daughter had interrupted her for the third time that the vampire woman finally looked up and noticed that indeed she had become the centre of unwanted attention. All the women in the bathroom were staring them wide-eyed. Bella grabbed Renesmee's wrist and took her out of the bathroom, speeding to the table they had been seated.
"Come on, Edward, let's go home," She insisted, taking her purse, feeling too upset to stay there any longer.
"I just paid the bill," Edward, agreeing with her, comforted her, wrapping his jacket around his wife's arms like a gentleman. He didn't need to do that, it was a simple habit of his.
Renesmee didn't even feel embarrassed about the overall situation. Instead, she was curious about the notification she had received on her phone. She was hoping it was from 7Cups and not from another stupid app. All she needed at that moment was a reply from the mysterious patient of her uncle's.
Unlocking her phone while her mother was speeding, she was beyond shocked to find that she had the notification from 7Cups she had been waiting for impatiently. Alas, it hadn't been what she had imagined it would be:
do i know you???
The hybrid raised her eyebrows. She hadn't expected that. But it was the reply that made the most sense - the patient indeed didn't know her - of course, he or she would be confused about why a random stranger was sending him or her a message.
Renesmee raised her chin proudly, not letting the negative emotions get to her, and typed a reply:
saw you in the group chat
She hoped her lie would work. If not, then she had just humiliated herself for the second time that day - and it would actually matter unlike in the stupid restaurant that she would probably visit again in ten years or so.
Within seconds, she got another message:
lol i've never been there
Crap. Of course, the lie wasn't going to work. Not everybody was comfortable with 7Cups' group chats and therapies. Most people preferred it in a certain way of being private about their experiences on the site. It was time to test if honesty was really the best policy:
okay, fine, i saw that you were online and i wanted to talk to someone. happy now?
The car was almost parked near the house, when Renesmee got another message, making her feel even more excited than she was already:
you are a girl, aren't you?
yeah, how about you? was her reply to the patient, curious about how they knew that.
Another response followed:
guy.
She had suspected it, having a gut feeling about it. Alas, something didn't sit right with her:
cool! how did you know i was a girl?
by the way you type. most of the girls i know start the convos with a hey and smiling emojis - dumb if you ask me
She held back a chuckle as she left the car and rushed to her room, ignoring her parents. When she plopped on the bed, she took her phone out of the pocket of her jeans and shifted her focus back on the online conversation:
oh.. i'm sure they were simply trying to be polite.
nah, they're just faking it, like everybody on social media these days, that's why i hate it.
Renesmee was unsure how to reply. She wasn't allowed on social media yet and it was a whole miracle that she had a smartphone. If her parents found out that she was chatting with strangers online, she would be banned from using modern-day devices for years.
i don't know if i like it either
The question that followed had surprised her:
what's your name?
Renesmee had thought that the boy would never ask. But then she wasn't sure if it was a good idea to share her real name in fear she would be followed. But she could use a nickname, couldn't she? Besides, he would probably assume it was short for Agnes or Vanessa. No one had really heard of name like her real one anyway:
ness, what's yours?
i'm theo.
