Globally, The United States’ population is the third largest with a population of 333 million people- the first one being China (1.393 billion) and India (1.327 billion). Its states with the highest population are California (39.52 million) and Texas (28.74 million). New York is the populous city in the US, with a population of 4.45 million people.

The United States' population is envisaged to grow throughout the century, uncertain future decline continually. Unlike China and India, the United States population is expected to grow exponentially. By 2070, the United States population is expected to surpass the country's total population of 400 million people. The growth in which the US population grows is mainly characterized by natural increases such as the difference between birth rate and death rate and high immigration rate, which has seemingly decreased over the past four years. The average US population growth is about 0.98% each year. In 2019, the population increased by 0.60%- the lowest US population record in a century. The main cause of the lowest population record is a decreased number of total births over the year. Moreover, baby boomers born after the Second World War are becoming old aged, thus increasing the death rate in the US despite the decreased population rate in the United States, as from 2016, the population is still expected to grow at a predictably continuous rate.

During the colonial era in the US, there were no records from the country’s population data, meaning that there were no formal censuses at the time. The records similarly show that the colonial population rose from a shaky start of only 3,800 from the 17th century to a total population of 1.5 million in 1750. The population continuously grew, and when the USA had its first official census, the population had risen to about 5 million people. The first official census was held in 1790, shortly after the US gained its independence.

In the US, censuses are constitutionally held once every ten years, ensuring that all citizens in the US are counted along with their personal information, including race, age, and sex. In the US, the last census was held in 2020. The data and population-related information are typically used for various purposes. The first purpose is to make sure that each US Congress seat well represents everyone in the country. State and national governments also need this information to make planning services more effective. For example, suppose they realize that a region's population in the country seems to increase rapidly. In that case, they can plot plans to ensure that the region is well equipped with better hospital facilities, more schools are built, and more constructions are built. Activities done by Census Bureau on an annual basis include estimating the US population using inter-census and post-census estimation methods. Statistical modeling is also applied to US current data to give an updated view of how the US population is expected to change between one census term and the other.

The UN estimated that the US population will have risen to over 400 million people by 2060.
