#love
One thinks it's just whipped up commercial stuff. The other thinks it's the perfect opportunity to let their loved ones know how much he likes them. No matter what, hardly anyone knows anything about the origin of the use. Like many holidays, pagan use is also the basis of this day. After all, in Roman times, the Lupercalia festival was held, a fertility feast in honor of the god Lupercus. This festival continued on 14 February and was also held by many Christians in earlier times. This party was eventually banned by Pope Gelasius.
At about the same time, February 14 was proclaimed as a holiday for Saint Valentinus. but a direct link doesn't seem to be there historically real. The legend says, however, that just before his execution, Saint Valentinus showed the blind daughter of his guard again by gifting her a letter signed with “From your Valentine” so that she could suddenly read and thus see again. This legend is at the root of his canonization. and was therefore the first Valentine's Day card. A custom that continued to gain popularity over the centuries, especially in the Anglo-Saxon world. Even today, anonymous Valentine cards are still being sent or not.
In our regions, however, the use was hardly known and was mainly promoted by florists and chocolatiers in the second half of the last century. It wasn't until the 80s that the concept started to catch on and 14 February became more and more a day to put your loved ones in the flowers (or the chocolate or whatever. ).
Of course, what people think of it must make up for themselves and in itself it is of course a very nice use. However, don't forget that you have to live and show love every day. and not just on 14 February.
Lots of love to all of you. always,
The story witch
