Valerian, a real plant for my spicy ornamental garden. Easy to grow, native, medicinal and graceful. Not the most striking bloomer with its small white to pink flowers on its 1.5 meter high stem, but we can make that bloom a bit more exuberant by planting the plants in large groups close to each other. Valerian feels good about that.
In nature, it grows mainly in humid places along marshy Ardennes streams, but you also encounter it on drier forest slopes. Probably they are different types or varieties of our Valeriana officinalis L. According to the botanists, the Valeriana repens Host. the humid grower, while Valeriana wallrothii Kreyer or lime valerian is found more in light forests and dry grasslands. In our herb gardens, a powerful growing cultivar mainly circulates, which can grow up to 2m high on fertile soil. As you can see, it's not always easy to get pure botanical species into our eco garden, but that makes a garden and work in the garden all the more fascinating.
The advantage of this variety is that the plant in the garden is not only in place near the pond or in the swamp, but can also grow in the forest garden and a border. For example, in a spicy rose-purple border, it can be combined with the Marshmallow, Musk Mallow and the Loosestrife. Nice in itself and even to eat.
Medicinally used plant parts: Valerianae radix or the roots of the Valerian. Or the root and rhizome of Valerian, this is how a herborist describes that part of a plant that uses a little medicinal. Due to its strong sweat-footed scent, the valerian root attracts the attention of humans and animals, especially the cats and even the rats love it.
I don't know whether the ratcatcher van Hamelen worked with valerian. What I do know is that when ripping my newly planted valerians are raked out of the ground over and over again by my own, and what's worse, by other people's cats. So control is the message and in those cases the ground must be touched down a little more firmly.
