Van Gend & Loos

#VANGENDENLOOS 😍 Van Gend & Loos is an independent transport company founded in 1806 and merged into DHL in 2003. Founder of Van Gend & Loos was the Antwerp innkeeper Jan-Baptist van Gend. In 1796 he married Maria Loos, who owned an inn, hotel De Kroon, in Antwerp. His brother-in-law, Petrus Josephus Loos, had a diligence company. In 1809, P.J. Loos died and his company was merged with Van Gend's company, so that diligence company Van Gend & Loos was formed.
The General Postwagen Company J.B. Van Gend & Loos has steadily expanded its network of diligence services, which transported passengers, goods and money. The separation of Belgium and the Netherlands in 1839 remained active in both countries (and outside).
Negotiations led to the fact that NS, in 1928, took over completely and became part of the ATO, H. Colignon & Cie (in short: Van Gend & Loos) General Expeditie Enterprise Van Gend en Loos. As an NS subsidiary, N.V. Expeditie Enterprise Van Gend & Loos switched to trucks and she was once again able to go through a considerable expansion. At major stations there were large freight warehouses with on one side closed freight wagons and on the other side a long line of grey with orange trucks and Van Gend & Loos vans. Since 1960, the head office was located at the Catharijnesingel in Utrecht.

Around 1980 this formula turned out to be no longer working. The market had changed but the company had also become too cumbersome and too official. The company was drastically cleansed. In 1984, general freight transport by rail was stopped and all the goods were switched to lorries. Sold in 1986 #NS Van Gend & Loos to Nedlloyd, where the company focused on transporting parcels and pallets in the Benelux.

In 1999, Nedlloyd Van Gend & Loos sold #Deutsche Post AG. In 2003 Deutsche Post had three subsidiaries, Danzas, #DHL Worldwide Express and Van Gend & Loos Euro Express merge into one express, freight and logistics company under the name DHL. This brought an end to the long anniversary.
