Om de transparantie van het negatieve calotype te verbeteren, ontdekte Abel Niépce de Saint Victor, de neef van Niépce, in 1847 hoe papier door glas te vervangen.
Om zilverbromide aan glas te laten hechten, had hij het idee om het te mengen met albumine (het wit van het ei). Hoewel ze enigszins contrastrijk waren, werden de beelden uiterst nauwkeurig, waardoor opticiens gedwongen werden nog efficiëntere lenzen te verfijnen.
