Vegetable garden in class
A vegetable garden? At school?
Yes! A vegetable garden is not only fun for adults. Children also find it very exciting. This is evidenced by the increase in the number of school gardens!
More and more elementary schools are starting a school mini-vegetable garden. That is not only very fun, but also very instructive. Children learn playfully what is involved before you can feast on your own grown tomato. They learn what a soil is built out of, when what needs to be sown in order to get a good harvest (plan!) and even a bit of mathematics; by dividing a growing bowl into equal boxes and planting plants with sufficient distance from each other. In addition, of course, they learn where all vegetables, fruits and herbs come from. Often they also become more curious to taste it, because they have grown it themselves!
In addition, children learn that people deal with the environment in a positive way, but also in a negative way.
