View of Delft sung by a Hagenese
Harrie Jekkers - View of Delft
The East Gate is the only one of the originally eight city gates left from the city of Delft. The original city gates had to be demolished as punishment in 1359, because Delft had lost a war against Duke Albrecht of Bavaria. After that, like the other city gates, the East Gate was immediately rebuilt.

Vermeer museum in Delft

Expansion burial cellar New
Since William of Orange in 1584, almost all members of the House of Orange-Nassau have rested with their husbands in the burial cellar of the Nieuwe Kerk in Delft. All princesses from the House Oranje-Nassau married in other royal houses are not in Delft with the exception of the princesses Catherine Belgica (7) and Louise (19).

The Night Watch or View of Delft as it now hangs in the museum is no longer the same as when Rembrandt and Vermeer added the last brush strokes. The oil and pigments on paintings react with each other and the environment, causing paint to change or sometimes even disappear. Chemologist Joen Hermans (University of Amsterdam & Rijksmuseum) shows which.
