The Black Cat

The Black Cat is a very old American literary magazine. You bought this magazine for 5 cents. The magazine is from 1895 and was available until 1922. It was published in Boston. The magazine consisted of short stories written by various literary writers, including Rupert Hughes, Susan Glaspell, Alice Hegan Rice. It also occasionally published science fiction and horror stories by writers Frank L. Pollack, Harry Stephen Keeler, among others.

Well-known writer Henry Miller wrote adventure stories in the last years of the magazine. The magazine was set up by editor Herman Umbstaetter. He was editor until 1913. In a tragic accident, Herman was killed while hunting and died of a gunshot wound. His wife Nelly Littlehale Umbstaetter was the magazines illustrator and did so until 1920.
