Virgin of Coromoto Sanctuary

#history Our Lady of Coromoto National Sanctuary is the temple where the Patroness of Venezuela, the Virgin of Coromoto, is venerated and is located in Portuguesa, 25 kilometres from Guanare, the capital of the state.
The story tells that on September 8, 1652, the image of the Virgin Mary appeared to the Indian Coromoto when he was going through a stream, the chieftain, was in the company of his wife, sister-in-law and nephew, when they saw a lady of extraordinary beauty, who spoke to him in her tongue and told them to go home to the whites so that she could be to throw the water (baptism) and so that he could get to heaven, the Indian Coromoto ignored and went even deeper into the jungle.
Until the 11th of September the Mother of Jesus appeared to him again and handed him a piece of tree bark with her image, at that time the catholic church took the second appearance as the date to worship the Virgin of Coromoto and it was in October 1944 that Pope Pius XII declared her “Celeste and Principal Patron Saint of Venezuela.
This National Shrine of Our Lady of Coromoto was elevated to the rank of Basilica Minor in 2006 by Pope Benedict XVI, but its coronation was made by Pope John Paul II in 1996 during a visit to Venezuela.
