Gewoonlijk gebruik ik van vlier niet het blad, wel de bessen en bloesem, toch dringen de nieuwe vlierscheuten zich nu op. Alsof ze zeggen, gebruik mij, jullie hebben ons nodig. Vroeger werden de bladeren ook meer gebruikt, maar omdat ze niet smakelijk en ook braakverwekkend kunnen zijn, zijn we steeds meer bes en bloesem gaan gebruiken. Nu met het Coronavirus word oa door Buhner geadviseerd om het mogelijk sterker anti-viraalwerkende blad als decoct (gekookt) te gebruiken.

To make a decocted elder leaf tincture: Boil four ounces of dried elder leaf (two ounces if fresh) in two quarts water until it is reduced by half. Cool, strain, then measure the amount of liquid left. To this add 25% pure grain alcohol. If your state will not allow you to buy pure grain alcohol (which is 95% alcohol) then after you cool and strain the liquid, put it in the pot again and reduce it once more by half. De Franse herbaliste Christophe Bernard schrijft 'la baie de sureau a une action immunostimulante, donc elle remonte des défenses immunitaires trop basses, et elle a aussi une action antivirale directe. Elle inhibe l’action d’une enzyme qui s’appelle la neuraminidase, et qui est une enzyme qui est utilisée par le virus pour se répliquer à notre insu dans nos propres cellules'.
