There are many more flop actions for every song that hits the charts. Now scientists say they figured out what separates a hit from a flop.

Music Tracks Analysis

Researchers analyzed half a million songs released in the UK between 1985 and 2015 from a database called AcousticBrainz. The AcousticBrainz project uses software to extract the basic properties of songs, such as rhythm and frequencies. Higher machine characteristics are than offered by machine learning techniques , trained by experts to infer acoustic characteristics (e.g. dancefulness, tone colour) and mood (for example cheerful, relaxed) from the music from its basic characteristics. The researchers looked at how these features have changed over time and whether they are very different for songs that made the UK's top 100 for singles.
