Wasp count
The time is right for a National Wasp Count, thinks Sjoert Fleurke of the Wasp Foundation . This weekend, August 20 and 21 , he organizes the first real wasp count in the Netherlands. Fleurke wants insight into the populations of social and solitary wasps over the years. Almost nothing is known about this. An earlier count attempt this year on 'wasp queen day' (April 30) fell into the water because no one liked wasps anymore. How different is that now?
“The wasp is not a pest but a blessing,” buys NRC. “Enough reasons to love wasps,” writes de Volkskrant. “Wasps are not out to stab you,” discover Trouw. Even in AD, the wasphate falters: ' What should we do with all those wasps: destroy or set a table anyway?’
Yet there is still a lot of evil nonsense passing by.'
Like when ranger Arjan Postma was recently allowed to tell Op1 why wasps are 'not so annoying anyway', but also said you can destroy wasp nests fine in August.
'Complete nonsense', Fleurke tweets. ‘1. Poison is bad for nature, 2. There are still sexual animals in the nest, 3. Most nests are still ecologically active in August.’
If you want to get rid of a hornet's nest: mail Wasp Foundation. Then the nest might be placed in Fleurkes Wespenheul (see Twitter below).
But don't forget to count them first this weekend!
