Ad Verbrugge talks with Jort Kelder about the coronacrisis, the economy and the role of the media. “We're in a form of mass psychosis.”

Kelder has recently expressed a critical opinion in the media about the policy pursued during the corona-crisis. He stressed at an early stage that this pandemic will have disastrous economic consequences. That was not taken from him in thanks. “The talk shows and the broadcasters are terribly afraid to kick their own audience.” Basement outlines that many transmitters have “gone on the emotional track”, looking at what the virus can do at the micro level. “A kind of atmosphere was created: you say something that should not be said. I find that a little difficult in a democracy.”

That doesn't mean that Cellar is arguing to throw everything open. “Of course I want to protect the weak. But the question is, do you do that by helping the economy to control?” That is also happening in the Netherlands now. Here was in fact also a strict lockdown, argues Kelder. “Not because the shops are not allowed to open, but because people are not in their minds to buy anything at all. [..] We are in a form of mass psychosis.” That is where we will notice the enormous consequences of this in the coming period.

How is it to proceed in the coming period? First of all, basement says: “We have reacted to the disease, which destroys everything around it.” The psychological aspect is therefore very important in recovery. “We all have to get ready for it again.” Furthermore, Cellar advocates a more fundamental reflection on the economic level. “We need to look at our economy in a more qualitative way.” Companies better get out of this crisis, says Cellar. Not financially, but qualitatively. “We are so focused on over-consumption that this is a time to slow down and say: we don't want that anymore. But you have to maintain your prosperity.”
