What are ethnicity?

The fact or state of belonging to a social group that has common national or cultural traditions. It is a
grouping of people who identify with each other on the basis of shared attributes that distinguish them
from other groups such as a common set of traditions, ancestry, language history, society, culture,
nation, religion, or social treatment within the residing areas.

Main characteristics of ethnicity
1. Cultural traits [language, clothing, holidays].
2. Sense of community.
3. Territoriality.
4. Ascribed membership from birth.
5. Feeling of ethnocentrism.

Types of ethnicity

1. American, Indian, or Alaska Natives.
2. Asian
3. White
4. Hispanic or Latino
5. Black or African American
6. Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander.
