
There are a large number of words in the English vocabulary. All words are different from each other due to their spellings, meanings and functions. On the basis of the functions of the words, those have been categorized into different parts or types. Those types are called parts of speech. Those are the words which play some function in any sentence and they fall into some category of speech. Let us understand what are parts of speech?
What are parts of speech?
Every word is a part of speech. A part of speech refers to a category according to which a word is assigned to a particular category of words due to its syntactic functions. There are a total eight parts of speech in English grammar which are noun, pronoun, adjective, verb, adverb, conjunction, preposition, interjection. All of them can be explained as below:
1. Noun: Noun refers to a name of a person, place, thing, group, feeling, etc. They are also called the naming words. Basically, everything in this world which has a name is a noun. Whether it is a tree, Mahatma Gandhi, rose, London, table, dog, or any other thing. A noun can be living as well as nonliving.
2. Pronoun: Pronoun refers to the words which are used in place of a noun. A pronoun is a substitute for a specific noun to remove repetition of noun especially when the reader or listeners know to whom you are referring to. They are also used to enhance the quality of writing as well as speaking. For example, he, she, it, they, we, you, us, me, him, theirs, yourself, this, that, etc.
3. Verbs: Verbs refer to the action words which show the action or event in the sentence. For example:
She talks.
He threw the ball.
Please be smart.
She was acting smartly in front of her teacher.
4. Adjective: Adjectives are the words which are used to describe the quality and state of beings of noun and pronoun. They are used to state the positive or negative quality of someone or something. For instance:
Ice cream is yummy.
We have a yellow car.
5. Adverb: Adverbs are the words which modify a verb, adjective, or another adverb. For example:
You sing loudly. - loudly describes sing (verb).
You sing very loudly. - very describes loudly (adjective)
You sing very loudly always. - always describes loudly (adverb)
6. Preposition: Prepositions are the words which tell the relationship between words. Eg. on, in, before, against, behind, above, under, etc.
She put pizza in the box.
They were hiding behind the bushes.
7. Conjunction: Conjunctions are the words used to join two or more sentences or phrases. Eg. and, or, because, although, while, etc.
I am happy whereas he is sad.
I left early because it was raining.
8. Interjection: Interjections are the words which show strong feeling or emotion. Exclamation marks can also be used with such words. Ouch, what, oh!, Oh my god!, hey! are the interjections. For example:
Wow, the dress is beautiful.
Hurray! We won the match.
Hey! How are you doing?
