What are the 10 Avatars?

There are two types of Avatars- Sakshaty-Avatara and Avesa-Avatara. The Lord Vishnu`s avatars ofLord Krishna, Lord Rama, and Lord Narasimha are called Sakshaty-Avataraand the Lord Vishnu`s avatars of Naravada Muni, Parashurama, Vyasa, etc.

1.    Matsya- It is the first avatar of Lord Vishnu that is believed to be incarnated when Manu, the first human on Earth, was caught in the great flood. It was during the reign of Satya Yuga when the fish Matsya saved his life.

2.    Kurma-Lord Vishnu took the form of a giant tortoise, Kurma, to carry the big mountain Mandrachala. Earlier, Mandrachala helped churn the ocean, but it started to sink as it was too extensive. Therefore, Lord Vishnu came down on Earth.

3.    Varaha-According to Hindu dharma, a devil named Hiranyaksha sank the whole Earth under the sea. Hence Lord Vishnu came down as half man and half boar called Varaha to bring the Earth to its initial place.

4.    Narsimha-Hiranya Kashyap was a privileged demon not to be killed by any human or animal. He can neither be killed inside or outside the house, at night or day, on Earth or in the sky. Hence, Lord Vishnu incarnated himself as Narsimha, half lion and half-human form, to kill the devil at dusk at the entrance of his house.

5.    Vamana-The fifth avatar of Lord Vishnu is the dwarf Brahmin, Vamana. God took this form to check the demon king- Mahabali. The king has seized three different worlds. Hence, Vamana asked him for three feet of land. The king agreed to give away his head when he realized that he was Lord Vishnu. Vamana stepped over his head to grant him liberation.

6.    Parashuram-Lord Vishnu took the form of sage to terminate the tyranny of the cruel Kshatriyas. Parashurama prayed to God Shiva and got an axe which he used to end the race.

7.     Rama-Lord Vishnu took the most popular and influential form of deity, Lord Rama, to kill king Ravana and save his wife, Sita. It depicts that there is always a victory of good over evil.

8.    Balarama-It is the 8th avatar of lord Vishnu who incarnated himself as Lord Balarama, the elder brother of Lord Krishna.

9.    Krishna-According to Mahabharata, Lord Vishnu took the form of Lord Krishna in the Dwapara Yuga to battle against his uncle, Kansa. He became the adviser of Pandavas during the battle of Kurukshetra.

10.    Kalki-It is the last avatar of Lord Vishnu, which is yet to come in the present Kali Yuga.Lord Vishnu will come on a white horse with a shining swordto end the evil humankind and begin a new Satya Yuga or Kalki Yuga.
