If you have been worrying about a loved one dealing with alcoholism then this article might help you understand with AA is and what are the 12 steps of AA. AA or Alcoholics Anonymous is a global, community-based program that was made to support people suffering from drinking. It provides a platform for people to come and meet with people to share their experiences and stories of recovery, it is a community that is created to help people stay sober, and it works.

Bill Wilson and his physician founded AA in 1935 and Dr. Bob Smith developed it further in 1939. Later Bill Wilson wrote a book with methods that are still used and are known as 12 steps of recovery. These 12 steps do not only help alcoholics but are used by other recovery groups for Gamblers and other forms of addiction.

This 12 step method provides extensive support and encouragement to those who want to overcome addiction through a community.

The 12 steps of AA

Here are the 12 steps of AA that have helped millions when followed genuinely.
1.    Admitting that we are powerless over alcohol, that our lives had become unmanageable.
2.    To believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
3.    To make a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of Goad as we understand Him.
4.    To make a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
5.    To Admit to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
6.    To be entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
7.    To humbly ask Him to remove our shortcomings.
8.    To make a list of all persons we had harmed, and become willing to make amends to them all.
9.    To make direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
10.    To continue to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admit it
11.    To seek through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
12.    To have a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

These 12 steps of AA have given results to most people but the newcomers are not forced to follow them unless they want to or are not able to. They are asked to attend the meetings with an open mind and share their stories and experiences until they feel comfortable enough to start following the 12 steps.

The members of AA support the newcomers by guiding them and helping them determine their problem with alcohol. At the end of it all, it is important to understand that alcoholism is a progressive illness that cannot be cured but can be managed through total abstinence from alcohol of any kind.
