Illiteracy is one of the biggest issues that hamper the evolution of a country in the modern world. It is often the major contributor to problems like poverty, unemployment, etc.
India has been plagued with a below global average literacy rate for decades. It continues to struggle to improve literacy rates despite prolonged efforts.
Education affects an individual in all spheres of life. An individual who’s unable to read and write cannot find sufficient work. Such individuals are often also be lacking in skills and awareness. This also significantly affects the lives of the people around them and the nation as well. Therefore, for the proper social and economic development of the country of India, it is important to take serious steps towards the eradication of illiteracy.
The Major Causes of Illiteracy in India
● Poverty: poverty is another major issue that India has faced for ages. Parents that do not have enough money to even manage two square meals for their families find it impossible to afford education. Children from such houses often need to find work at very young ages.
● Illiterate Parents: uneducated parents often fail to understand the significance of education. Especially in remote areas, we find that children of illiterate parents are the ones that cannot read and write.
● Unemployed Educated Population: in a country where several of the educated people remain without work, people lack enough motivation to take education seriously. After all, many believe that getting educated is what will land you a job.
● Lack of Infrastructure and School Facilities: people from remote areas that cannot access schools tend to remain uneducated. Schools in rural areas are few and far. Students find it hard to cover long distances without proper transportation.
● Social Barriers: a large number of children have to miss out on sufficient education due to social barriers. Issues like gender bias, child labor, child marriages, etc., are some key factors that affect child literacy in India.
What Steps Can We Take to Control and End Illiteracy in India?
● Free and Inclusive Education: the provision of free education at various educational institutions can significantly improve literacy rates. Education should also be inclusive. The government should make provisions such that children from all sections of the society, regardless of caste, religion, financial background, etc., can procure education.
● Awareness: creating awareness is perhaps the first and foremost step. The people of the nation need to understand the importance of education and its role in enhancing their lives.
● Vocational Training Programs: vocational classes come into play to provide individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge to earn income.
● Investment in Required Infrastructure: it’s the job of the government and philanthropists to provide funds for the enhancement of educational institutions. Several schools lack basic facilities like proper toilets. This makes it difficult for students, especially girls, to stay in schools.
● Changing Social Norms: it is crucial to get rid of the social problems that deprive children of rightful education.
