Cancer of the lungs is known as lung cancer. Inhaling and exhaling, you breathe in oxygen and expel carbon dioxide through your lungs. Worldwide, lung cancer kills more people than any other form of cancer.
As with any other cancer, lung cancer can occur in people who have never been exposed to tobacco smoke. The longer you've smoked and the more cigarettes you've smoked, the greater your risk of developing lung cancer. After years of smoking, you can greatly reduce your risk of developing lung cancer by quitting.
Symptoms
In the early stages of lung cancer, there are usually no signs or symptoms. In advanced stages of lung cancer, symptoms and signs are more common.
• A new cough that doesn't go away
• Coughing up blood, even a small amount
• Shortness of breath
• Chest pain
• Hoarseness
• Losing weight without trying
• Bone pain
• Headache
Consult with your doctor if you notice any long-term signs or symptoms that are causing you to worry. Make an appointment with your doctor if you've been unable to quit smoking. Counseling, medication, and nicotine replacement products can all be recommended by your doctor to help you kick the habit.
Causes
Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer in both smokers and nonsmokers. Lung cancer can also strike people who have never smoked or who have only been exposed to secondhand smoke for a short period. There may be no clear cause of lung cancer in these cases.
Cigarette smoking is a major factor in causing lung cancer
Doctors believe that smoking damages the cells that line the lungs, causing lung cancer. Inhaling cigarette smoke, which contains cancer-causing substances (carcinogens), begins to alter lung tissue immediately.
Your body may be able to heal itself at first. However, the normal cells that line your lungs become more and more damaged with each subsequent exposure. Cancer may develop as a result of long-term damage to the cells.
Types of cancer of the lungs
Doctors use the appearance of lung cancer cells under a microscope to categorize the two major types of lung cancer. Based on the type of lung cancer you have, your doctor will make treatment decisions.
Lung cancer can be divided into two general categories:
Lung cancer with a small cell count. Small cell lung cancer is more common in heavy smokers than non-small cell lung cancer, but it is still rare.
A type of lung cancer is called non-small cell carcinoma. As a general term, "non-small cell lung cancer" refers to a wide range of lung cancers. Adenocarcinoma and large cell carcinoma are examples of cancers that do not originate in the small cells of the lungs.
Hazard factors
You may have a higher risk of developing lung cancer if you have a history of smoking. Quitting smoking, for example, can help reduce some of the risk factors.
Other factors, such as your family history, are out of your control.
• Smoking is a risk factor for lung cancer. Lung cancer risk rises directly to the number of cigarettes smoked per day and the length of time spent smoking. The earlier you quit, the better your chances of avoiding lung cancer.
• Inhalation of toxins from cigarette smoke or other household pollutants. Even if you don't smoke, secondhand smoke can increase your risk of developing lung cancer.
• Radiation therapy that was previously administered. Lung cancer is more likely to develop if you've had radiation therapy to the chest for another type of cancer. Radon gas in the air When uranium breaks down naturally, it creates radon gas released into the air we breathe. Any building, including homes, can have dangerously high levels of radon.
• Asbestos and other carcinogens exposure. Workers exposed to asbestos and other cancer-causing substances, such as arsenic, chromium, and nickel, have a higher risk of developing lung cancer.
• Lung cancer in the family. Children, siblings, and parents with a history of lung cancer face an elevated risk of developing the disease themselves.
Complications
Shortness of breath can be a complication of lung cancer. Shortness of breath can occur in people with lung cancer if cancer spreads to the lungs' major airways. When fluid builds up around the lungs due to lung cancer, it becomes more difficult to inhale through the affected lung fully.
It was suffocating to death. You may cough up blood due to bleeding in the airways caused by lung cancer (hemoptysis). Bleeding can become life-threatening at times.
Bleeding can be controlled with a variety of methods.
Pain
The lining of the lung or another part of the body, such as the bone, can be affected by advanced lung cancer. You should tell your doctor if you are experiencing pain, as there are many ways to alleviate it.
Chest congestion (pleural effusion)
The fluid that accumulates around the affected lung in the chest cavity can signify lung cancer (pleural space).
Shortness of breath can be caused by a buildup of fluid in the lungs. Pleural effusions can be prevented by draining fluid from the chest and reducing the risk of recurrence.
Spread of cancer to different parts of the body (metastasis). The brain and bones are common sites of metastasis in lung cancer patients.
When cancer spreads, it can cause various symptoms, including pain, nausea, headaches, and more. It is usually incurable as soon as the disease has spread beyond the lungs and into other organs. There are treatments available that can help you feel better and live a longer life.
