What area code is 917?

Nineteen seventeen is part of the North American Numbering Plan and belongs to the five boroughs of New York City. Staten Island, Queens, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Manhattan make up its council districts.

Population growth in New York City (NYC) has been rapid over the past few decades. The 917 area code was created in 1993 because New York City's population has grown so rapidly that residents have difficulty finding phone numbers.
As part of the North American Numbering Plan (MALH), the 917 area code served the five boroughs of New York City - Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island.. As a result of the 1984 redistribution of the Numbering Plan Area, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island were given the 718 area code, while Manhattan and the Bronx received the 212 area code.
