Climate change is the changing pattern of the weather and temperatures for a long period. We, humans, are mostly the cause of this change due to our activities such as deforestation, releasing poisonous and untreated gasses from industries into the air, using transportation and natural causes like volcanic activities. Below are some of the things that caused climate change.
Deforestation
This is the cutting down or burning of trees without replacing them. Trees aid in bringing rain, areas around forests experience rains frequently. This activity leads to an increase in temperature.
Trees and plants take in and store carbon dioxide, when burning or cutting them down they emit the poisonous gas, carbon dioxide.
Transportation
Most cars run on gasoline and steam powered trains and boats are also powered by fossil fuel which in turn releases large quantities of carbon dioxide into the air when burned.
Fossil Fuel
Fossil fuels include coal, oil and gas. The burning of these materials produce heat trapping gasses such as fluorine gasses that lead to increase of temperatures in the environment. Other gasses produced when burning fossil fuel are carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide.
Fertilizers
Fertilizers that contain nitrogen produce nitrogen oxide into the environment.
Livestock Farming
Increase in livestock farming such as sheep and cows produce large amounts of methane when they digest their food.
Most farmers that keep cows go into biogas production using the cow’s fecal matter; this in turn releases large amounts of methane into the air.
Greenhouse Effect
Human activities whether in small or large quantities produce dangerous greenhouse gasses such as methane and fluorine gasses. Some greenhouse gasses such as carbon dioxide accumulate for a longer period of time which contributes to the greenhouse effect.
Coal Mining
Coal mining produces a lot of greenhouse gasses like methane, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide among others. Some houses use coal for heating, contributing largely to the emission of harmful gasses like carbon monoxide. Coal fires from the mines can burn for years releasing smoke which contains sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide.
Industry Fumes
Industries produce poisonous gasses and release the untreated gasses or fumes into the environment.
Landfills For Garbage
These are major sources of methane emission into the environment.
Food Production
The machines used in food productions like farming tractors and fishing boats use fossil fuel to run.
Mining
Gasses such as sulfur dioxide emitted from mining sites and mining wastes can be toxic when exposed to the air. Mining activities such as construction, expansion, operation and abandonment lead to climate change.
Destruction Of Landscapes And Habitats
If a mountain is standing in the way of future developments it will be blasted or leveled, effectively leaving a scarred landscape and disturbing the ecosystem.
Conclusion
Climate change has been a major concern in the world. Some worldwide organizations were started to curb or reduce the causes. Creating awareness and educating people from all over the world will reduce some of the causes that lead to climate change. Some programs such as ‘cut one tree and plant two’ should be well promoted.
