Urinary tract infection, commonly referred to as UTI, is an infection that is known by many as an infection that affects the urinary tract. There are many myths and misconceptions about this infection. Most UTI cases are said to have been mostly women. The infection regularly affects the urethra and the bladder. When serious the infection can even affect the kidneys.
Causes of UTI
The main causes of the infection are microorganisms, mostly bacteria. Fungi can also be said to cause UTIs though in very rare cases. The bacteria go inside the urinary system from excrement. The reason why women are commonly affected is that, unlike men, women have a short urethra. The bacteria hence get to the bladder or kidney quickly and easily and the person ends up being infected.
Holding one`s urine for long periods can also cause UTI. The bacteria build up in the kidney which exposes one to the urinary tract infection. Holding urine can also weaken muscles of the bladder thus the bladder does not fully empty itself. Bacteria that remain in the bladder thus cause UTIs.
Is UTI caused by low intake of water? Most scientists have discovered that not taking enough water can lead to infection. As we all know, water leads to urination hence little intake of water reduces urination. Urination is important for clearing bacteria from the system. When urination is little, there is a risk of the system harboring the bacteria that cause infection. People suffering from conditions that disturb the flow of urine in the system also face a risk of getting infected.
Signs and Symptoms of UTI
There are various ways to tell if one has been infected. It is advisable that one seeks medical help when noticing the following symptoms:
• A persistent need to pee even if a small amount of urine comes when you pee
• Fever is an indication that the kidneys may have been infected
• The person may also start feeling worn out or quivering if they have a weakened immune system. This is also a sign that the infection has spread to the kidney
• When peeing one feels a burning sensation
• An ache or pressure on the lower abdomen or the back
• One`s pee may have a strange smell and be bloody or dark
• Though not reliable, one gets a feeling that the bladder is not fully empty.
Remedies for UTI
Even though UTIs may seem like a dangerous infection, there are luckily ways to treat the infections. Most doctors prescribe antibiotics to patients diagnosed with UTIs. However, some people feel uncomfortable going to the doctor and using home remedies. By estimates, 25 to 45% of UTI patients use home remedies. Some of these remedies include:
• For the females, they should wipe from front to back
• Drinking cranberry juice that is unsweetened to prevent the bacteria from sticking to the urinary tract
• Good sexual hygiene
• By drinking a lot of water
• Getting adequate vitamin C
• Urinating when one feels like peeing
Conclusion
In general, we can say that UTIs can cause a lot of damage to the parts of the urinary system. Just because the infection is common in women it doesn’t mean that men cannot be infected. Therefore, people should take it seriously and seek medical attention after they start experiencing the signs and symptoms.
