Through other eyes. We find ourselves extremely tolerant, open-minded, sober and sociable. How do people from other countries see? What do they think of us?

Immediately feels rude
To find out what people from other countries think about us, you could ask tourists. But people who have been around in the Netherlands for a little longer know us just a little better. That's why Peteke Feijten and Sjoerd Kooiker of the SCP held four group talks with 26 expats from different Western countries. They lived and worked here at that time for a few years. What did they think of us? 'One of the things that foreigners always notice is indeed the directness of the Netherlands, 'says Kooiker. Most of them were not used to. In their own country, things remain unspoken much more often. Or at least they use more subtle words to make something clear. Feijten: 'They had to get used to our directness. They find it quite unkind and rude at first.’
