Blood vessels in the smooth muscles of the rectum and anus walls are known as hemorrhoids (Piles). When small arteries and veins meet, these structures are considered normal by the medical community. To protect them, smooth muscles and connective tissue lie between them and the pectinate line, the line that separates the upper 2/3 of the anus from its lower 1/3. This is an important anatomic distinction because of the cells that line hemorrhoids and the nerves that provide sensation.
What are the internal and external hemorrhoids?
The cells that cover internal hemorrhoids are identical to those that line the rest of the intestines because they are located above the pectinate line. Underneath the skin-like cells that cover external hemorrhoids, they develop below the surface.
What are the symptoms of hemorrhoids?
When hemorrhoids swell and cause itching, pain, and bleeding, they are an issue.
Rectal Bleeding Symptoms and Causes
Bright red, maroon, or black and tarry blood in the stool is all possible hues of stool blood (not visible to the naked eye). Blood in the stool can be caused by a variety of things, including:
• Hemorrhoids
• Cancer
• Anal fissures
• Crohn's disease
• Ulcerative colitis
• Anal cancer
How do hemorrhoids on the outside and inside look like?
Due to their inability to be seen without swelling and inflammation or formation of a blood clot, normal hemorrhoidal tissue cannot be examined under the microscope. Externally swollen or internally prolapsed hemorrhoids can be seen, but internal hemorrhoids are hidden inside the anus and cannot be seen. An anal verge thrombosed hemorrhoid appears as a dark blue lump protruding from the anus and is caused by a blood clot inside a swollen blood vessel. A doctor should see it. Hemorrhoids that are not thrombosed manifest themselves as a rubbery lump. Multiple swollen hemorrhoids are not uncommon.
What causes hemorrhoids?
Hemorrhoids are a normal part of the body, but most people and healthcare professionals consider them abnormal because they only show up when they swell and cause problems.
Whenever the small vessels that makeup hemorrhoids are under increased pressure, hemorrhoids swell and fill up with blood. As a result, they grow in size, resulting in symptoms. Several factors can result in increased pressure:
This can be caused by a person straining to pass stool of a smaller caliber, which is common in people with low-fiber diets; it can also be caused by increased pressure in the blood vessels due to pregnancy, which is linked to hemorrhoid swelling. The muscles that support the rectum and anus may also weaken due to pregnancy's hormonal changes.
• Sitting on the toilet for an extended period can increase pressure in the hemorrhoid blood vessels.
• Obesity
• Diarrhea, both acute and chronic
• Colon cancer
• Previous rectal surgery
• Spinal cord injury and lack of erect posture
