What do musicians mean when they talk about texture?
Texture describes the complexity of a musical composition. The word texture is used because adding different layers or elements to music creates.
Musical Texture
A musical texture can be simple or elaborate, and is described with the following conditions:
- Monophonic: a single melody line.
- Biphonic: two different simultaneous melodies.
- Heterophonic: a slightly elaborated melody with one or two voices; some intervals.
- Homophonic: a single melody line with chords or accompaniment.
- Polyphonic: a composition with lots of voices and harmonies.
