What Does IMB Mean?

IMB is the acronym for INTERMENSTRUAL BLEEDING. It is referred to as abnormal vaginal bleeding and sometimes referred to as spotting or metrorrhagia. This is a kind of bleeding that occurs between the normal period and most times less concern is placed on it. However, there are cases when it persists will be flagged as a problem, and the individual needs to go and see a doctor.

Blood resulting from IMB or spotting is usually light but can be heavy in severe cases with the blood color ranging from light pink to red and most times dark-brown. IMB occurs either during the normal period or even in a month when someone is not expecting her menstrual period.

HOW DO YOU KNOW YOU ARE HAVING IMB?
During ovulation, most people who menstruate regularly experience light bleeding intermittently, and this is accompanied by mild discomfort and spotting during the mid-cycle. Peradventure you don’t experience this and you suddenly start, it is an indication of a problem. To some, it comes as though they are about having a second period in the same month they are menstruating, some theirs are random and unpredictable. The symptoms are almost the same as the ones you experience during your normal period such as bloating, abdominal cramps, etc. It may be painless depending on the individual.

CAUSES
For normal menstruation, there is a hormonal change that causes the uterine lining to get prepared for the fertilization of an egg. If there was no egg to fertilize, the uterine lining sheds and passes through the vagina as a blood. However, in the presence of abnormality, the uterine can shed its lining; problems within the vagina can also bring out abnormal vagina bleeding. However, some of the factors that can IMB include:

    Hormonal imbalance: A lot of factors can trigger the hormones responsible to regulate your cycle to get out of balance. Such factors have a great effect on the estrogen and progesterone levels in your body. Most ladies either starting or ending the intake of any hormonal contraceptive such as birth control pills, contraceptive implants, and patches, have higher chances of experiencing this abnormal vagina bleeding. Some serious conditions such as having a dysfunctional ovary or a thyroid gland issue can affect the hormones which can lead to abnormal bleeding.

    Complications in Pregnancy: Spotting during pregnancy may not have a threat to life or pose much concern but in some cases, the woman is advised to go and see a doctor. When the bleeding isn’t regular and flows heavily, it could be a sign of miscarriage, or in some cases when it spots as though you are menstruating but you are pregnant, it could be a sign that your pregnancy is ectopic. Ectopic pregnancy is that which takes place outside the uterus (womb) i.e. implantation of the fertilized egg took place in the fallopian tube.

    Infection: Infections such as Chlamydia and other sexually transmitted diseases, pelvic inflammatory diseases, and in rare cases infection arising from vaginal douching can result in vagina abnormal bleeding.

    Cancer: Examples of cancers that can lead to abnormal vagina bleeding include cervical cancers, ovarian cancers, vulvar cancer, uterine cancer, primary fallopian tube cancer, and endometrial cancer. These cancers can predispose one in bleed irregularly.

    Other related predisposing factors include – inflammation of the cervix (cervicitis), vagina (vaginitis), PCOS (Polycystic ovarian syndrome, in cases of extreme stress in most rare cases of diabetes.

It is advisable to see a doctor once you start seeing any form of abnormal bleeding especially for pregnant women.

There is no specific treatment for this as the treatment course is dependent on the underlying cause of the disease which is determined via a diagnostic test involving pelvic examination, biopsy, ultrasound testing, or a hormonal profiling test.

Don’t be a careless woman! Watch and monitor your body always and report to the hospital as fast as possible. Self-medication is bad.
