What does ITT mean?

My daughter is 12 and she is at the age when children are very inquisitive. They want to know anything and everything they look at. She has recently got a cell phone as a gift from us with an Internet connection and she is going crazy over searching for new things.

Last night she came to me and asked me what ITT was. She read it somewhere and didn’t know what it was and this gave me an idea of writing about ITT in detail.

ITT is an initialism and stands for “in this thread”. Nope, it has nothing to do with creativity or sowing but it is connected to online forums, social networking sites, and message boards. When you see ITT, it simply means that the person is referring to the initial topic and all the other messages written under it, and that is the thread or an internet thread. In easier words, you can say that it is a string of messages sent by different people on the same topic. All of these messages can be seen by everyone replying and each thread is started by an “OP” or “original poster”.

These threads are mainly used on social networks like Twitter and Facebook but the Reddit uses them the most in the comment section.

How did “ITT” start?

The term “ITT” has been around since 2003 as mentioned on Urban Dictionary, this is even before Reddit. This early definition defines ITT as “in this forum thread”. Initially, ITT was used in the title of the first post and was mostly used for humorous effect for example while roasting a person people would crack jokes under it.

Times evolved and so did ITT. Now is used to be more ironic or sarcastic and is also used to describe different types of messages under a thread.

How is “ITT” used?

Usually, the Internet terms can be used in real-life conversations but ITT is used only online.
Here are some examples of how you can use ITT.

When asked to write about near-death experiences
When asked to post pictures of expensive watches or other products
When asked to write about disturbing incidents

So, now must have a little idea of what “ITT” is and how it is used. One simply has to mention “ITT” and describe what they want others to write under the thread and you are done. It is an easy way to attract people and probe them into writing their experiences and knowledge on specific topics.
