Not a sportsman at all, Roland Garros was a French aviation pioneer and warpilot, best known for his role in the early development of aviation and for his heroic achievements during the First World War. Born on October 6, 1888 on Reunion Island, he became fascinated by airplanes at an early age.

Garros established a name in 1913 by being the first pilot to fly non-stop across the Mediterranean. This achievement made him famous and confirmed his status as one of the most innovative pilots of his time. During the First World War, he served as a fighter pilot for France and experimented with aircraft weapon systems. He developed a mechanism that allowed pilots to fire through the propeller, a major technological advance in aviation warfare.
