What Does 'SMH' Mean?

Be it chat rooms or social media websites, one gets to hear about "SMH'' many times. But what does "SMH'' really mean? Let's discuss this today -

SMH is an internet slang word that stands for "Shake My Head" or "Shaking My Head". It's used to declare frustration or mis-faith in the face of what's understood as glaringly explicit craziness or most distraction.

When the use SMH

SMH can be used in any situation where you can nod your head in agreement or disagreement. If someone asks you something for yourself, you will probably think for a while to either give or not to give that person and then turn your head to express your feelings yes or no.  

When the same thing happens online, the expression "smh" can be used to indicate "I want to give you or not" without typing more than three letters.

It is not fair to say that SMH is always used by itself. People form a clear opinion about SMH, such as "SMH you're bonkers" or "SMH guys don't know how to use a speed stick."

Some people refer to SMH as "hate so much".  But it is like the bizarro meaning of SMH. The term "hate so much" isn't wrong, but it shouldn't imply that most people associate with SMH. You should better avoid using it just for that purpose.

SMH was added to the urban dictionary in 2004 as a meaning that is similar to the current meaning of primality. There is still no evidence as to where this phrase came from. It may be drawn up around the same time that the phrase "facepalm" was a similar Internet popular word that was first uploaded to Urban Dictionary the same duration as SMH.

SMH has gradually made its way into the general vernacular. It has gained a distinct identity in the form of memes and reaction gifs in social media websites like Facebook and Tumblr. It has been used in social media platforms and text messages since the early 2010s.


According to Google Trends in 2011, SMH's popularity is slowly declining, but the good news is that it still hasn't lost its popularity compared to "Facebook".


How to Use SMH?

You should use SMH when you are expressing your agreement or disagreement on something. There aren't too many rules for using SMH. It is used to express disgust, disbelief, shock or disappointment.  You can also use SMH as a joke, just as you can in real life for a laugh or to tease your head for a joke.


Conclusions

There is no grammar rule for SMH. Most people apply it at the beginning of a sentence ("smh ya'll can't know a dog from a horse"), but it can be applied anywhere in the middle or end of a sentence. You can also use this word in the sentences you make. It's just like you nod quietly in real life.
