On Snapchat, emojis are symbols of hierarchy- proof that you are on a roll. In particular, emojis that appear next to a friend’s name symbolizes the level of your friendship. One such emoji is the gold heart or what people call the yellow heart emoji.

What does this yellow heart emoji mean?

The short answer, you are #best friends with that person. It means that you and that friend have been sending snaps and chatting the most with each other. In other words, you interact with each other more than you do with other people.

The yellow heart emoji will appear next to both of your names because the friendship has to be two-sided. It will not appear if only one of you communicates. If you can keep this best friends status for two weeks straight, the yellow heart changes to red, symbolizing a deeper friendship. How long does it take for the Yellow Heart emoji to appear?

It’s still unclear when the yellow heart emoji pops up. Some people get it within hours of constantly chatting, while others get it after a few days. Why did my yellow heart disappear?

The yellow heart can disappear for three reasons;
1.    You have been #1 best friend for two weeks, so you were promoted to the red heart.

2.    You are no longer Snapchat's best friends, and you have stopped or reduced the communication. This can be both of you, or only one of you has stopped communicating as much.

3.    One of you is sending more snaps to somebody else. For example;
•    Currently, Person 1 and Person 2 share a yellow heart emoji.
•    Person 1 sends 100 snaps to Person 2.
•    Person 2 sends 101 snaps to Person 1.
•    With time, Person 2 starts sending 104 snaps to Person 3, and person 3 matches this order.

 Eventually, the yellow heart emoji will go to people 2 and 3 because they are clearly better friends now.

Unfortunately, the yellow heart emoji can only be awarded to one best friend at a time, and that is the person you chat and snap with the most at the time.

How long will it take to disappear?

Again, there is no allocated time as to when the yellow heart emoji disappears if you reduce chatting with your best friend. Snapchat algorithms will decide this by looking at both your interactions with each other and other people. Once it notices a better streak with someone else, the heart emoji disappears. If you simply stopped chatting and snapping, it can take up to three days for the emoji to disappear.
