Loosen clothing
Heartburn occurs when stomach contents ascend into the oesophagus, where stomach acids can burn the tissue. In rare situations, you may get heartburn as a result of tight clothing pinching your stomach. If that is the case, the first thing you should do is unbuckle your belt — or your jeans, dress, or anything else is squeezing you.
Stand up straight
Additionally, your posture can lead to heartburn. Suppose you are seated or lying down. Attempt standing. If you're already standing, attempt to maintain a more upright posture. Maintaining an upright posture alleviates pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). The LES is a muscular ring that helps prevent stomach acid from rising from entering the oesophagus.
Elevate your upper body
Lying down might aggravate heartburn. When it's time to sleep, lift your upper body by adjusting your sleeping surface. Lifting your head with more cushions is frequently insufficient. Rather than that, the objective should be to elevate your body from the waist up. If you have an adjustable bed, adjust it to a comfortable angle. If your bed is not adjustable, a wedge pillow can be used to alter the angle of your sleeping surface.
Combine baking soda and water
Without realising it, you may already have a heartburn treatment on hand in your kitchen. By neutralising your stomach acid, baking soda can help alleviate some instances of heartburn. This can be accomplished by dissolving a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water and gently drinking it. Indeed, you should consume all liquids gently if you have heartburn.
Consider ginger
For generations, ginger has been used as a folk cure for heartburn. Because ginger can help alleviate nausea, some believe it may be worth trying for heartburn as well. Consider using grated or chopped ginger root into your favourite stir-fry, soup, or other recipes. Steep fresh ginger root dried ginger root or ginger tea bags in hot water to produce ginger tea.
However, it is probably advisable to avoid ginger ale. Carbonated beverages are a typical cause of heartburn, and most ginger ale brands contain artificial flavouring.
Supplement with licorice
Licorice root is another traditional treatment for heartburn. It is believed that it may help increase the mucous covering of the esophageal lining, protecting it from stomach acid injury. DGL is a supplement that comprises licorice that has been treated to eliminate the majority of the glycyrrhizin, a molecule that can produce unpleasant side effects. Consuming an excessive amount of licorice or DGL may result in an increase in blood pressure, a decrease in potassium levels, and an interaction with some drugs. Consult your physician before consuming licorice or DGL supplements.
