What House am I in Harry Porter?

      


Many websites have attempted to answer that question over the years with multiple-choice quizzes based on anecdotes from the seven books. On the 20th anniversary of the first volume's publication on June 26, we thought it was high time to give a more thorough answer to this question, create a scientific-based quiz to determine which House best matches your personality.

Now it's your turn to complete the quiz and see which House closely resembles your personality statistically. You'll also be able to examine how well you matched the remaining three residences.

To do so, we collaborated with the researchers to create a 21-question quiz based on multiple well-known scientific personality questionnaires, selecting questions that were relevant to the books' main themes.

We were able to create a detailed description of how different personality qualities correspond to the personalities of members of each of the four Houses thanks to the tens of thousands of data points we obtained.

It would seem strange to relate the complex science of personality psychology to a fictitious universe, but a close reading of the Harry Potter canon — or, in many of our instances, numerous close rereads — reveals something intriguing: The Sorting Hat is a personality test! As a result, it was only natural to try to dissect that process into a scientific survey.

Fortunately, there is a large corpus of research on the subject. Unlike the popular Myers-Briggs personality test, which has little scientific backing, social scientists have developed a number of personality surveys that have been thoroughly researched and show statistically significant differences in how people behave.

The "Big Five" test is well-known of these, and it assesses five personality traits: "openness to experience," "conscientiousness," "extraversion," "agreeableness," and "neuroticism."

The Harry Potter personality quiz's 21 questions are based on the Big Five test as well as a few other well-researched personality inventories that assess attributes such as "courage" and "humility," which are frequently encountered in the Harry Potter novels.

The information gathered on the personalities of Harry Potter characters, from Harry himself to Professor Snape and Luna Love good, among others, reveals that characters from different Houses have distinct personality features.

We utilize a standard statistical model to quantify the link between datasets to analyze your replies and compare them to how closely they resemble each of the four Houses when you take this quiz.

Because your affinity for each House is calculated separately, it's possible that your personality closely resembles two different Houses — a phenomenon that the Sorting Hat is all too familiar with, given its history of waffling between two Houses when a character's personality isn't a clear match for one.

Hermione Granger's ferocious pursuit of knowledge, for example, resembles the studiousness associated with Raven claw more than Gryffindor, as many fans have noted —"The Sorting Hat spent nearly four minutes trying to decide whether it should place Hermione in Raven claw or Gryffindor."
