What Is a Bed?
Sizing is one of the most fundamental decisions when purchasing a mattress. Sleep position, sleeper height, bed-sharing habits, and room space all determine the appropriate mattress size.
Height varies between models, but length and width dimensions are fairly consistent across all manufacturers. The standard mattress sizes include twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king. Some companies also offer oversized, RV, and custom options.
We translate what mattress dimensions mean in terms of space, function, and comfort. We also clarify how to identify the size best suited to your lifestyle and budget.

How Wide Is a Twin Bed?
A typical twin mattress is 38 inches wide, which is just over 3 feet. This width is intended for solo sleepers. It is roomy enough for most kids, teens, and individual adults.
Two sleepers would be cramped, as would a sleeper sharing the bed with a pet. Those who sprawl out or change positions a lot also frequently feel limited on a twin mattress.
Twin XL Dimensions
A twin XL mattress has the same width as a standard twin but is about 5 inches longer. The extra length suits solo sleepers up to 6 feet 7 inches tall. We’ll cover everything you need to know about twin XL dimensions.

How Long Is a Twin XL Mattress?
Most twin XL mattresses are 80 inches long, which is 5 inches longer than a standard twin bed. The length translates to about 6 feet 7 inches, so a twin XL should comfortably sleep most individuals under this height.
With the same width as a standard twin, a twin XL isn’t suitable for more than one sleeper. It may also be restrictive for individuals who spread out or change positions frequently. The extra length, however, is more accommodating for pets who sleep at the foot of the bed.
A full size bed is 4.5 feet wide, giving individual sleepers plenty of space. While once the standard for couples, most now find a full mattress crowded. Side-to-side movement may be challenging for partners, but single sleepers should have plenty of space to move around or share their beds with a pet.
Shoppers should note that a full mattress is the same length as a standard twin. As such, it may not be long enough for individuals taller than 6 feet 3 inches.
