What is A Capella singing?
In the genera of music, today we are going to talk about the music style A Capella. When you hear the word A Capella, you often think of a singer, singer, or a group that sings without musical instruments. A Capella also always reminds me of theater, opera, classical, gospel. I went to see exactly what A Capella means and it surprised me how much A Capella is sung and how many groups we have in the Netherlands and found that A Capella no longer just belonged to the church, but it is now in all kinds of musical styles, such as folk, dance, rock, pop, classical, celtic, gospel, hip hop, r&b, soul, jazz, kpop. It also reminded me of a performance of Soul II Soul with the special version of song Back to Life, sung by the great singer Caron Wheeler who does this great, because it's a difficult song to sing that A Capella, but she can do that because she's a born talent. Besides being a singer, she is also a songwriter, producer and musician.
What is A Capella singing?
Singing A Capella is derived from the Italian word alla cappella which means “the chapel”. In Vatican City, Italy, there is the Sistine Chapel, where A Capella was a tradition.
A Capella was mainly found in church choirs. That is why we find the word chapel in the word A Capella. Singing A Capella means that the voice is only used through singing. The voice is the instrument. A Capella is not supported by musical instruments. A Capella is usually sung by a choir.
In the past, it was mainly with church music. Church music means “music in the chapel”.
Sometimes, a musical instrument was used to support or indicate the correct pitch or for vocal parts. The musical instrument that was often used was the church organ. It wasn't until much later that the church organ served to support singing together during church services. Today, the meaning of A Capella is no longer “the chapel”, but is described as “(choir) music without accompaniment”. Where it used to take place mostly in churches, A Capella can now also be heard in several musical styles, including pop, rock, dance music.
