What comes to mind when you think about this, i can guess. Generally we would define a chief technical officer as an executive incharge of the IT support and technicalities associated with running an organization but it goes deeper than that.
Also known as a chief technology officer,a chief technology officer (CTO) is an executive responsible for fixing IT-related and technical issues, he is also accountable for the development, implementation, control and assessment of the company's technology reserves. This individual handles its research and development of new technologies to improve and increase the revenue and sales of the company's partners, investors, vendors, and their customer base in general while on the other hand, building up the company brand than day-to-day operations.
The primary aim of a CTO is to evaluate the company's short- and long-term needs and utilizing capital to undertake ventures that will assist the organization towards achieving its goals. In large organizations, the CTO reports to the chief information officer. While in others, he acts as both.
How to become a CTO
Inorder to become a CTO, interested individuals should have a bachelor's degree in a computer science or information technology related field. It can includes any of these
● Software Development
● Computer Programming
● Cyber Security
● Business Administration
● Management Information Systems.
Having a degree in any of these field lays the foundation for the role of CTO but it doesnt automatically qualify one for the position. Individuals would have to work their way up the IT ranks thereby gaining first hand practical experience on the job. Depending on the company, an individual may need five to 10 years of on the job experience in IT before they can gain a CTO role. Aside from Formal education, a cto requires the following skills to function maximally;

● Marketing skills
● Decision-making skills.
● Leadership skills.
● Soft skills like problem solving, communication skills,Time management, multitasking and even project management .
Roles of Chief Technical Officer
A Depending on the company, a CTO may play one or several roles according to the company's organizational structure, the following are responsibilities typically performed by CTO's in an organization:
1. Infrastructure manager:
As infrastructure managers, they supervise security, data, network and maintenance. They also carry out their organization's technological strategy and manage the company's technical road blueprints.
2. Strategic planner:
They are in charge of formulating the organization's technological strategy and aid in the creation of new business techniques. The CTO may foresee how technological strategy formulated will be utilized within the company to improve revenue. He/she will also research and develop new technologies within the company to ensure its success.
3. Consumer liaison:
The CTO is like the link between the company and its consumers. He focuses on providing plans that will match with the company's ideal customer needs. They also relate with customers, have proper understanding of target markets and market trends and they aid in the delivery of IT projects to market.
4. Thinker:
The CTO has the responsibility of analyzing target markets and then creating corporate policies and business prototypes that will match the market trends. In addition to this, the CTO will relate well with the CEO and other members of the company's senior management.

Not to be confused, a CTO is very similar to a chief information officer (CIO). CTOs deals with technology infrastructure that closely align with the company' goals, while CIOs work alongside the members of IT staff members to execute day-to-day operations.
