The flute is the earliest instrument we found archaeological and dates back to Paleolithic times, more than 35,000 years ago. The flute belongs to the woodwinds, but unlike other woodwinds using wicker, the flute is reedless and produces its sounds from the airstream over an opening. An early flute found in China was called a ch'ie. Many ancient cultures have passed a form of flute throughout history.

The flute is considered to be one of the oldest man-made musical instruments that still exist today. In 1995, archaeologists in Eastern Europe found a bone flute of bones from 43,000 to 80,000 years old.
