What is a food web?

What is a food web?
All forms of life require energy. Living creatures require energy to sustain and repair their bodies, whether they generate it themselves or obtain it from the food they hunt. The sun is the ultimate source of energy for Earth's existence. Nothing would be able to exist without it. As a result, living beings have evolved unique methods of gathering the sun's energy and utilizing it for their benefit. They've also created unique partnerships and exchanges that allow for the flow of energy. After they gather the energy, it is distributed among the numerous creatures in a given region. A food web is an energy-transfer system.

All of the food networks in a single ecosystem make it into a food web. Every living thing in an environment is a component of multiple food chains. Each food chain indicates one route for energy and minerals to pass through the environment. A food web is made up of all the interrelated and overlapping food systems in an ecosystem. When you connect several food chains, you create a food web. Because animals do not consume the same food every day and like to engage with many preys, a food chain alone may not be sufficient to depict the complexity of our ecosystems. Food webs come into play here. Food webs show how energy moves through an environment by merging various food chains. When seen in context, a food web depicts the energy flow from producers to consumers in an ecosystem in a realistic manner.
Within this wide concept, there are five main trophic levels: primary producers, primary consumers, secondary consumers, tertiary consumers, and apex predators. A food web depicts how different trophic levels within various food chains interact with one another as well as how energy moves between them within an ecosystem.

An Example
A direct flow of energy between species may be seen in food chains. A mouse munching seeds on the forest floor might start a chain. Then a snake appears and eats the mouse. An owl consumes the snake after a time. With each step, part of the sun's energy, which has been held within the seeds, is released or transfers to the upper tropical level. The transmission of energy in an ecosystem is not properly depicted by food chains. That is because there are typically various creatures that can be eaten, different food preferences of consumers and interlinking among different trophic levels of different food chains. All these factors lead to formation of a food web which is highly sustainable i.e. even if creatures on one level of one food chain starts reducing in number, the next trophic level consumer is less likely to face shortage of food since the need could be met by consuming the creatures of same level in another food chain. The mouse, for example, might consume seeds, but it might also eat berries or even grass. A snake, an owl, or a fox may all devour the mouse. The owl might eat the snake. But it could also be eaten by a fox or a coyote in the forest. A food web is a much more realistic diagram of energy flow within an ecosystem since each organism may consume and be eaten by several organisms.
