When you go to the dentist, the first person you see is usually the dental hygienist. Just as there are doctors and nurses in hospitals, there are dentists and dental hygienists in dental offices.

Knowing what each person does can help you feel more comfortable at your next appointment. We take a look at the difference between the dentist and the dental hygienist and what you should expect from each.

What is a dentist?

A dentist is a doctor who works in the field of dentistry. This includes the mouth, teeth, gums and related areas. Some studies have shown that diseases of the teeth and gums can indicate or signal certain health problems. The health of the mouth is vital to the overall health of the body, and a dentist encourages and assists his or her patients in maintaining a healthy mouth through regular cleanings and checkups.

What does a dentist do?

A dental hygienist may point out a problem in your mouth to a dentist or periodontist, but he or she'll not diagnose the problem. That task is left to the dentists, who'll then come up with a plan to prioritize treatment and help the patient achieve his or her oral health goals.

Another major difference between dentists and hygienists is specialization. A dental hygienist may work in the office of a periodontist, but most likely doesn't consider themselves a periodontal hygienist.
