What is a noun

A noun is a naming word. Any words that name people, animals, places, classes, or things is a noun. The word 'noun' comes from the Latin word 'Norman' meaning name. The name of anything that you see or feel is a noun.

The noun is usually of two kinds:

An abstract noun: is the name of a quality attributes circumstance of a thing: that is, names of people, animals, places, things, or ideas have no physical representation. Examples are:-beauty, friendship, gratitude, handsome, importance, ugliness, kindness, anger, joy, standard, etc. abstract nouns are subdivided into two;

• Count noun: These are nouns that can be counted and are also separable entities. Examples are: eight spoons, two boxes, four socks
• Mass noun: a noun denoting something that cannot be counted (e.g. a substance or quality), but are also not separable. Examples are water, sand, Happiness, love, Knowledge, grass.

Concrete noun:-is a name of anything (items) that can be seen and touched which may be regarded as processing some attributes. They are also names of physical entities. Examples are books, shoes, stones, tables, buildings, trees e t c. Concrete nouns are subdivided into three;
Proper nouns: is a name used to denote an individual or things as distinct from all others individuals or things of their/its kind. proper noun name particular persons, places, animals, things, or ideas simply to serve as a label for identification; Examples are; river Jordan, Mount Everest, India, China e t c

• Common nouns: these are the opposite of proper nouns as nouns here do not give specific names of persons, animals, places, things. that is, a common noun is a name that can be applied in the same sense to any and every person or thing of the same kind; noun in this category, group into classes or give general name instead of specific names such as a book, football club, table, program, etc.
  
  
  

• Collective noun: collective noun is a name of a group of similar units regarded as forming a whole. As the name indicates, this gives names of a collection of people, animals, places, things; Examples are: Family, committee, Army, contingent, etc
