
In English grammar, nouns are a part of speech. A part of speech is a category in which words can be assigned in a particular category according to their functions. They are everywhere in our conversations and writings but how do we identify and use them. And, nouns are considered the first one. Let us read further to understand what is a noun?
What is a noun?
A noun is a word which is a name of a person, place, thing, group, feeling, etc. A noun names something or someone. And fortunately everything in this world has got a name. Nouns can play the role of a specific subject, direct object, indirect object, subject complement, object complement, or adjective. For example, Zayn, park, India, table, flock, etc. So, in easiest words, it can be said that nouns are the naming words.
Nouns form a large variety therefore they also have particular types. There are different types of nouns which can be explained as under:
1. Common noun: Common nouns are the words or names given to a particular class of persons, places, things or objects. Those are not unique names. They are just names to understand their identity. For example, girl, man, table, school, country, tree, husband, etc.
2. Proper noun: Proper noun is the specific or unique name given to a particular person, place, thing or object. They are unique names to identify a particular person or object. For example, India, Barack Obama, Apollo Hospital, Thar Desert, etc.
Note: Proper nouns always begin with capital letters as you can see in the given examples.
Example of using capital letters with a proper and a common noun: R. N. School is the best school in this city.
3. Abstract noun: Abstract noun is a name of something which you cannot sense or perceive from your five senses. It denotes an idea, feeling or quality of something. For example, beauty, honesty, freedom, danger, happiness, etc.
4. Concrete noun: Concrete nouns are words which can be seen and touched. They can be perceived through five senses. For example, ball, ocean, book, shoe, hand, etc. A common noun can also be a concrete noun.
5. Countable noun: Countable nouns are those names of living and non-living things which can be counted in numbers. For example, bananas/bananas, pencil/pencils, girl/girls, train/trains, etc.
6. Uncountable nouns: Uncountable nouns are those names of living and nonliving objects which cannot be counted in numbers. For example, water, salt, sugar, snow, music, etc.
7. Compound noun: Compound nouns are made from joining two or more words. For example: break+fast= breakfast, text+book=textbook, snow+ball=snowball, sun+flower=sunflower, etc.
8. Collective noun: Collective nouns are the names given to a group of living and nonliving things. For example:
a. A group of ants- army
b. A group of birds- flock
c. A group of keys- bunch
d. A group of viewers- audience
Now, you must have understood that there are nouns everywhere you see around. So, yes, it is true. A noun can be singular and plural as well. Noun is a word used to name or refer to something or someone.
