WHAT IS A SANCOCHO...?
Recently, my wife and I were talking, counting things when we called Venezuela and she told me that her brothers made a sancocho; my wife enjoyed her party over the phone and online; my daughter, listening, asked me:
Dad, what's a sancocho?
And my wife said to him:
Daughter's a soup.
But I answered:
Not a daughter, it's not just soup, water and vegetables, it's much more than that.
FOR A VENEZUELAN
A sancocho is friendship, love, brotherhood, kisses, hugs.
It is to share with the neighbor, with friends and whoever arrives, it is here to try, try there.
It's partying, it's rumba, it's Christmas, it's Easter and carnival, it's beach, cognac, rum, women, rats, moments, years that
form the happiness of the Venezuelan.
It's sun, plain, snow, mountains and slopes. It's a well and a coal river.
It's drum and fish, meat and vegetables, it's sweet, it's family... it's love daughter.
She answered me:
How do you know all that?
And I answered:
Because I'm Venezuelan, I know because I'm from there and I grew up and a Sancocho is a Venezuelan icon that identifies us.
He told me,
Dad, I want to be VENEZOLANA!!!!!, make me a sancocho.
I replied:
How difficult is it to explain the simple things of our daily lives when we are away, how difficult it is to translate the feeling, how sad it is to fight with the inclusion of another culture, of other icons (mc donald, tim hortons, disney, etc.). What a pain to feel that our language is lost, our accent, how we lose sight of our landscapes, how bitter it is to look into the distance and see only memories, how to hide it, how to live without my old friends, my brothers, without a family reunion and without a good sancocho. #Queesunsancocho
