What is a trombone?
The trombone belongs to the brass instrument family. Like all brass blowers, the sound is produced when the player's vibrating lips cause the air column in the instrument to vibrate. Trombones use a telescopic sliding mechanism that varies the length of the instrument to change pitch. The word “trombone” comes from the Italian tromba, which means “trumpet”, and the Italian suffix - one, meaning 'big'. That's why the instrument name means “big trumpet”. In English, the instrument was called a 'sackbut'. It made its first appearance in the 15th century.
