Amsterdam5 is de officiële hoofdstad van het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden. The city is located between the bay of the IJ, in the north, and on the banks of the Amstel, in the southeast. Founded in the 12th century as a small fishing village, it is today the largest city in the country and a large financial and cultural center of international projection.

It has about 810,000 inhabitants and in the metropolitan area live about 1.5 million people. It should be noted that Amsterdam is part of the large Dutch agglomeration Randstad (together with the cities of The Hague, Rotterdam and Utrecht), which has more than 6.5 million inhabitants.
