ASMR stands for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response. Mary Allen Wells, PhD, says it is often described as a tingling sensation of "tingling" sensations with blinking, neck, and sometimes back and limbs, with positive emotions (almost warm) and feelings of relaxation. , Director and assistant professor at the University of North Carolina Sniper Science and postgraduate sciences in neurodiagnostic at Chapel Hill and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
The term ASMR was coined in 2010 by the founder of a Facebook group that recorded the sensation. But it has been referred to as "brain tingles" or a "brain orgasm". ASMR YouTube videos have been referred to as "funny videos" or "screen fucks". (Note: Despite the characteristic terminology of sex, ASMR is not normally sexually explicit, although ASMR videos of sexual intercourse have a growing following.)
ASMR is usually triggered by some kind of sensory stimulus (visual, auditory, tactile), otherwise, it is known as "trigger".
Some examples of well-known triggers include:
Visual: Observe someone's focus on a task, such as folding laundry or assembling a model.
Shravan - Humorous, sound, tapping, paper cringing, etc. Soft and mournful voices can also trigger the sensation, which is why painter Bob Ross's YouTube videos are finally so popular in the ASMR community, Wells says.
Touch - hairbrush, the gentle touch of hands, manicure, etc.
How does it work?
Simply put, science has not actually fully figured out ASMR. The phenomenon is simply new and there is not enough research to support its existence, let alone its benefits.
But researchers have a few theories. A 2014 study from the University of Swansea found that ASMR may be related to a scenario, a phenomenon that associates a person's experience with their experience in another sense (e.g., the ability to hear color, or to see a particular smell). Some people believe that discipline is caused by cross-wiring in the brain, or by the intersection of a sensory system with another.
Others think that ASMR can be like Frison, when you get "cold" or say the technical word for shaking your spine down, listening to a part of emotionally influenced music. And yet another theory emphasizes that ASMR may be the same physiological process that causes germs.
Based solely on academic experience, it is clear that some people are able to cope with ASMR, others simply do not. "I think, for the experience, those who are able to enjoy it are instantaneous," said Dr. Christopher Winter, MD, a sleep researcher and author of Sleep Solutions. "I'm guessing from the partial evidence it could have an immediate effect and probably most of the time it gets better."
What are the therapeutic benefits of ASMR?
Since we still do not know how ASMR works, we cannot confirm whether we can use it for therapeutic purposes. But many in the community believe that "winter pain, as a tool to improve feelings of depression/anxiety, and as a rest for sleep," maybe the primary benefit of ASMR, says Winter.
A study earlier this year found that watching ASMR videos reduced heart rate and increased skin transport levels, which may be on some physical basis to stimulate ASMR's rest and relaxation feelings.
Wells says if you don't enjoy tail-tail "tingles", it's possible that you might fall asleep by watching ATMR videos or listening to ASMR playlists. "In sleep, it is very important to relax before bed and be able to put aside all your worries and 'to do lists. I often ask them to do something annoying and painful if they get their mind racing before bed." The techniques described are simply boring and monotonous, "he said.
Meanwhile, due to the lack of research in the ASMR itself, it is not clear how long it takes to develop into anything like sleep, anxiety improvement, etc., says Winter. Also, many people watch ASMR videos on their phones and a lot of research indicates that your phone is linked to low quality sleep with you in bed.
