What is Autism and What Causes Autism?

Autism by definition is a disorder of mental development that often manifests itself in the form of communication disorders, short attention span, and social problems. Children who show autistic features will not participate and play the way a normal child would. Years ago autism was incredibly rare and probably never found in children. Studies have shown that about 1 in 110 children are diagnosed with autism today. That figure was unprecedented just 40 years ago.

Autism is the most serious form of autism spectrum disorder; other serious disorders in the same field are Pervasive Developmental Disorder or PDD, Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified, Rett Syndrome, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, and Asperger's syndrome.

PDD and PDDNOS are termed when a person exhibits symptoms from all forms of autism but does not exactly meet the symptoms of a particular type. Rett Syndrome is a very physical form of autism where the loss of muscle tone is one of the first symptoms. Most of the time a child with Rett Syndrome will appear normal and grow naturally at first, then stop completely and lose some of his or her skills. The same is true of Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, a child will start to shrink after a few years.

Asperger's Syndrome and Classic Autism are the two most common diseases in Autism Spectrum. More children and people have been diagnosed and continue to be diagnosed with these two diseases more often than anyone is aware of. Although autism itself is a debilitating and progressive childhood disorder, Asperger's syndrome may not manifest itself until adulthood.

A child with Asperger's syndrome will usually have as many social and behavioral problems as a child with autism but will still be able to gradually develop good speech and decent behavioral skills. Often Asperger's suffers from social and personal problems. They also appear to be clinging to actions and get very upset if they cannot do it. But a person with Asperger's syndrome is often overly intelligent.

Although there is no definitive answer to what causes autism there are ongoing studies and theories on what autism is. It has been researched and argued that mercury, once used in vaccines, to fight germs, has caused autism. This type of vaccine has not been used since the 1990s after the discovery of potential harm to humans.

Another suggestion for what causes autism is genetics that is linked to environmental factors. And no one has been able to say 100% exactly what causes autism. When the question "what is autism?" a difficult question arises. All of these diseases include various problems that make them difficult to diagnose.

Fortunately, there are many people out there who continue to research what autism is. With great hope and little luck, we will soon find out what is causing this degenerative disease. Recognizing its existence is the first step in raising awareness. Children and People All over the U.S. and internationally suffer from autism and distinct disorders in the autism spectrum.
