What is Cancel Culture
Cancel culture, which encourages people, brands, and even shows and movies to be "cancelled" because of what some regard to be offensive or objectionable words or beliefs, isn't a new phenomenon.
The roots of cancel culture, according to Dr. Jill McCorkel, a professor of sociology and criminology at Villanova University, have been prevalent throughout human history. For generations, she added, societies have penalised people who act outside of societal standards, and this is only another variant.
"Cancel culture is a modern version of a much bolder set of social processes that we may witness in the form of banishment," she explained. "[They're] made to reinforce a set of norms."
Cancel culture, also known as call-out culture, is a modern kind of ostracism in which a person is pushed out of social or professional circles, whether online, on social media, or in person. It is said that those who have been subjected to this ostracism have been "cancelled."
