What is carnival?
Centuries ago, in ancient Rome, there were already exuberant and debauchant parties in the winter. Carnival was also celebrated in the Middle Ages. People had fun before fasting began. For the fasting, the abstinence of excessive food and drink, begins for Christians,40 days before Easter. So there is a lot going loose for that!

The carnival is still celebrated. In the Netherlands, this is mainly in the south, under the rivers. But also in Venice it is exuberantly celebrated with elegant masks and beautiful cloaks. In New Orleans, the bands play on the street, cozy! In Rio de Janeiro, people dance in parade through the city, in beautiful costumes. After that, there's spectacular fireworks.
Today, the carnival season officially begins on the eleventh of the eleventh (November 11), at 11.11 a.m. The number 11 is the number of the fools and the lunatics! And November 11 is 40 days before December 21. There are parades with float, everyone is dressed up and sometimes also painting. There's a Prince Carnival and a Council of Elf.
